The Full Story

Oklahoma City sits at the heart of Tornado Alley. The metro has been struck by thirteen F4-or-stronger tornadoes since recordkeeping began. The May 3, 1999 F5 outbreak, the May 20, 2013 EF5 in Moore, and the more recent 2024 metro events define the worst-case scenario every OKC homeowner has insured for.

Tornado damage is not just amplified wind damage. It's a structural event. A roof in the path of an EF2 or stronger isn't lifted shingle by shingle — sections of the deck go, the trusses can shift, the chimney can topple. The exterior envelope of the home may be partially or fully compromised. The insurance claim is correspondingly complex: dwelling, other structures, contents, additional living expenses (ALE, hotel and meals while the home is uninhabitable), and code-upgrade coverage all activate together.

What we do on a tornado loss

1. Same-day emergency tarping and structural protection — we get the home sealed against rain before the next system rolls through. In a multi-day outbreak this matters more than any other single decision.

2. Full structural assessment — roof deck integrity, truss displacement, wall sheathing damage, attached structures (porches, decks, fences). We don't patch a tornado-damaged roof; we determine what has to be rebuilt.

3. Coordinated claim — we work with your carrier on dwelling Coverage A, Other Structures Coverage B (detached garages, sheds, fences), and ALE so everything is filed together and paid on a single timeline.

4. Code-upgrade documentation — Oklahoma's 2018 IRC adoption changed wind-uplift fastening requirements, ice-and-water-shield standards, and impact-rated material allowances. A pre-2018 home being rebuilt has to come up to current code. Most policies cover this under Coverage D Code Upgrade, but only if the contractor knows to file it.

5. Full rebuild to manufacturer spec — Class 4 impact-rated shingles, six-nail fastening pattern, proper underlayment lapping, code-current ridge ventilation, and the warranty paperwork to back it.

The Moore, OK precedent

The 2013 EF5 destroyed 1,150 homes and damaged 4,000 more. The contractors who did right by Moore homeowners were the ones who refused to cut corners on the rebuild — full demolition, proper permits, real engineering on the structural members. The contractors who cut corners produced roofs that failed in subsequent storms. We build for the next storm, not just the last one.
