The Full Story

Attic ventilation is the most under-discussed component of a roof system, and it's the reason a surprising number of OKC roofs fail at 60–70% of their warrantied lifespan. GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed, and IKO all explicitly require adequate attic ventilation as a condition of the manufacturer warranty. A roof with bad ventilation isn't just hot — it's a void warranty waiting to be triggered.

Why ventilation matters in Oklahoma

In an OKC summer, ambient outdoor temperature peaks around 100–105°F. An unventilated attic in direct sun runs 140–160°F. That heat radiates back through the roof deck, accelerating shingle aging from below. Granule adhesion fails, mat embrittlement accelerates, and the manufacturer's 30-year shingle starts failing at year 17. The summer heat also drives air-conditioning costs — the ducts running through the attic are now in a 150°F environment, losing 20–30% of cooling capacity to the ambient before it reaches the registers.

In an OKC winter — yes, we have ice dams, even though they're less common than further north — bad ventilation traps moisture in the attic. Warm, moist house air rises into the cold attic, condenses on the underside of the deck, and either rots the deck or refreezes and creates ice dams that back water under the shingles.

What balanced ventilation looks like

The rule is 1 square foot of net free vent area per 150 square feet of attic floor, balanced 50/50 between intake (low) and exhaust (high). Most OKC homes have one or the other — not both. A house with ridge vents but no soffit vents has no air intake; the ridge vent is functionally inert. A house with soffit vents but a closed-up ridge has no exhaust; warm air pools at the peak.

What we install or correct

  • Continuous ridge venting that's actually opened to the attic (often the original install left it sealed)
  • Soffit vent screens, not painted-shut soffits or insulation blocking the airflow path
  • Baffles between the soffit vents and insulation so the airflow path stays clear
  • Removal of conflicting passive vents (gable vents that short-circuit ridge-and-soffit flow)
  • Powered attic fan only where geometry doesn't support continuous ridge venting (rare; we recommend balanced passive over powered every time we can)
